The Luther College Music Department presents Fall 2020 Opera Scenes, featuring operatic duets by Mozart, Rossini, Gounod, von Flotow, and Bernstein. Students of MUS 362, directed by Beth Ray, Nicholas Shaneyfelt, and Rachel Storlie, prepared and performed the scenes in accordance with Luther College COVID protocol: wearing masks, utilizing adjusted staging for safety, and recording in an empty Noble Recital Hall. Nathan Eck and Eric Head are the Steinway Philharmonic.
The opera scenes performance is a culmination of the rehearsal process: musical preparation, intensive translation and diction work, character study and analysis, staging and movement. As the quarter unfolded, common themes of distance & separation became clear in the excerpted scenes. You'll witness characters reuniting after a long separation; others, who express curiosity after a brief encounter; and most tragic: those who relish their last moments together before what they believe will be a temporary separation.
Join us to celebrate the students of MUS 362: Opera Scenes and the operatic art form!
