Luther completed a perfect weekend defeating St. Olaf College 5-2 at Independence High School this afternoon. This was the fourth of four games played at Mustang Park this weekend and the Norse finished with a mark of 4-0 improving to 9-1 overall.
Trent Athman gave Luther an early 1-0 lead with a solo home run over the left field fence in the top of the first. Athman's home run was his second of the year.
The Norse knocked out Ole starter Sam Pressman midway through the fifth, after scoring four runs on four hits. Bryce Hingst lead-off the frame with a solo shot over the right field fence. Jared Swanson followed with an RBI single that was followed by a Jake Vogt RBI double. Three of the Norse four runs were unearned in this frame thanks to two Ole errors.
St. Olaf scored once in the sixth and ninth innings to finish the scoring. The Oles made things interesting in the ninth loading the bases with two outs. Nate Loch got out of the jam, getting Ole catcher Jake Ossell to ground out to third to end the game.
Joey Cardamon (3-0) pitched seven solid innings to secure the win on the mound. Cardamon allowed one run on seven hits, walked three and struck out six.
Multiple hits were recorded by Vogt (2-5), Matt Clark (2-4) and Swanson (2-4).
Luther is scheduled to travel to University of Northwestern (MN) and play Crown College (2x7) on Tuesday, March 20. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
