Biology Colloquium: Risks Neonicotinoid Insecticides Pose to the Environment

April 1 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Mike Miller is a stream ecologist with Wisconsin’s Department of Natural Resources. He monitors pesticide concentrations in Wisconsin’s streams and rivers, including those in the Driftless Area. Miller will join the meeting virtually to discuss the environmental risks associated with neonicotinoid insecticides (neonics)—a widely used class of synthetic pesticides linked to extensive water contamination and harm to beneficial insect populations.
Neonics, derived from nicotine, are known for their extreme toxicity to both pest and beneficial insects, with studies showing their presence in ground and surface waters at potentially harmful concentrations. Miller will share insights on their impact on aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, as well as the economic and regulatory factors surrounding their use.
Sponsored by Iowa Driftless Trout Unlimited and the Luther College Biology Department.
