Gordon Thomas Pollock, 1950

Gordon Thomas Pollock, 80, Elgin, Iowa, died Sunday, December 4, 2011, at the Good Samaritan Center, West Union, Iowa. Gordon was born on August 8, 1931, on the Pollock family farm, rural Volga, Iowa, to Thomas and Mary (Dennler) Pollock. He was baptized and confirmed at Illyria Community Church where he was a lifelong member. Gordon attended Highland District #3 through the 8th grade and graduated from Elgin High School with the class of 1949. He attended Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, for one year.

Gordon was united in marriage to Arlene Schultz on November 29, 1952, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville, Iowa. Seven children were born to this union. Gordon served in the United States Army Signal Corps during the Korean Conflict from 1952-1954, when he was honorably discharged. He farmed the family farm for many years until his retirement in 2003.

He held a variety of offices while on the Illyria Church Board and was involved with the Elgin Coop and Land O’Lakes where he was on the local board and later the Corporate Board of Land O' Lakes. Gordon was a member of the American Legion, Elgin Lions Club, Clayton County Pork Producers and Farm Bureau. He loved farming, reading, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. The highlights of his life were attending extra-curricular school and college events that his family was involved in such as football, basketball, softball, vocal and instrumental music and drama. He will be deeply missed by his family and many friends.

Survivors include his wife, Arlene Pollock, Elgin; five children, Vali (Warren) Leeps, North Platte, Neb., Scott Pollock, Volga, Dr. Tom (Lenee) Pollock, Aplington, Deon (Kurt) Amundson, Mount Hope, Wis., Beth (Joel) Harris, Pleasant Plains, Ill.; son-in-law, Darrell Slifka, State Center; seventeen grandchildren, including ELI POLLOCK ’08, and JENNA POLLOCK ‘12; three great-grandchildren and one sister, Deon Schoenheider, Willowbrook, Ill.

Gordon was preceded in death by his parents; two children, Forrest Pollock and Cheryl (pollock) Slifka ‘88; one grandson, Forrest Pollock; one daughter-in-law, Joan Pollock, and one brother-in-law, Dr. William Schoenheider.

Visitation was held on Friday, December 9, 2011, at the Leonard – Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Elgin, Iowa.

A Celebration of Life was held on Saturday, December 10, 2011, at the Illyria Community Church, rural Elgin, Iowa, with military honors. The Rev. Rick Johnson officiating.

Leonard – Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Elgin, Iowa, was in charge of arrangements.

Military Service:

Inducted into the Army: Dec. 4, 1952.

Discharged: Nov. 4, 1954.

Trained as cryptographer, Signal Corp. San Luis Obispo, Calif.

Served in Korea.
