Retiring Support for 802.11B Wireless

As part of our ongoing efforts to improve our wireless network, ITS is retiring support the IEEE 802.11B protocol on the Luther College wireless network. As of  8/1/2016 devices that only support 802.11B will no longer be able to connect.

When this protocol runs it negatively impacts the quality of wireless service for others in that area and leads to slower network performance for the entire community.

802.11B is a dated protocol. It has been superseded by G, N and most recently AC protocols. Devices that can only communicate with 802.11B include:

  • Nintendo Wii
  • Nintendo DS original
  • Nintendo DS Lite
  • Sony PSP all versions
  • Other devices/equipment that use 802.11B only to connect to the Luther College wireless networks.

For the best network experience:

  • Choose devices that are dual band. This means they support both the 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz radio frequencies.  The 5Ghz frequency can support many more devices at higher speeds. You can tell if your device/computer supports 5Ghz by checking to see if it can see the LCWireless5G network. If it cannot see this please consider upgrading with a Dual Band Wireless USB adaptor.
  • If you bring wireless printers you must connect them to the Luther wireless network rather than allowing them to make their own wireless network. Printers that make their own network negatively impact the performance of the network for the entire community.

The Technology Help Desk can assist with configuration.
