Class of 1953 Spring 2014 Letter

Spring 2014

Dear Luther College Classmates of 1953,

Praesidem habemus!  We have a president.  A year ago we were on the verge, and I reported in the Spring 2013 letter that the Board of Regents were taking the responsibilities of their choice with due diligence and would announce a new president before long. Though a year later doesn’t quite fit the category of “before long,” the due diligence has resulted in a choice that will please you all. Paula J. Carlson, currently vice-president for mission at St. Olaf College, is the choice, as you will have learned long before you receive this letter. I like the comment of my friend, Diane Scholl, professor of English at Luther, who has known Dr. Carlson for many years (Dr. Carlson’s father was the pastor of Diane’s Lutheran congregation in Brooklyn in her youth). Diane observed, “Paula Carlson is a woman of integrity, intelligence, and composure.” President Carlson’s husband, Thomas H. Schattauer, is professor of liturgics and dean of the chapel at Wartburg Theological Seminary, Dubuque, Iowa. They have two grown children.
