Dear Luther College Classmates of 1953,
I am writing this in mid-October, one of the loveliest times of the year in Northeast Iowa. The summons of 19th Century America, “Look West,” could well have served as the motto of Luther College. Autumn beckons our gaze westward from the campus, to enjoy the splash of color on the hills, with the river gently (in that season) winding its way below them. When the landscape architect, Jens Jensen, redesigned the campus on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the college (1911), he is said to have recommended that the view to the west never be obscured by a building. Though the Dahl Centennial Union now occupies that location, despite his recommendation, the view is still available through window walls on each level.
