Art exhibit by seven Luther College alumni artists to be displayed on campus April 12- May 2
“Those Who Can Do Teach,” a series of mixed-media works by Luther College recent alumni art educators, will be on display in the Preus Library April 12 through May 27. The artists involved include Micayla Irmiter, class of 2014; Jenna Darsee, Jenny Bonnell and Katie Mathis, class of 2015; Lars Johnson and Robin Schone Hengesteg, class of 2016; and Maxwell Green, class of 2017.
A gallery reception for the artists is 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday, April 13, in the Hovde Room of Preus Library. Both the gallery show and the reception are open to the public with no charge for admission.
The exhibit was created from the phrase “Those who can’t do, teach” to show that art educators can not only teach but also maintain an active studio practice. When asked how he finds time to create art while teaching, Johnson comments “I maintain a pretty consistent sketchbook practice, but my art-making process has changed. My art projects are now crafting lessons that I think my students will love and engage with.” Green comments on the same question, saying “I try to create in the classroom with my students as much as possible, but I also just make sure to give fairly strict priority for at least an hour or two in my studio space at home every night.” Full interviews with all of the alumni can be found in Luther’s Winter 2018 edition of the Alumni Magazine, or on the website: https://tinyurl.com/arteducators.
A national liberal arts college with an enrollment of 2,050, Luther offers an academic curriculum that leads to the Bachelor of Arts degree in more than 60 majors and pre-professional
