Luther senior Radermacher debuts one-act musical Jan. 26

See Martin Luther as never before in an original one-act musical “Martin Luther: Monk of Funk” 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, at Decorah Lutheran Church, 309 Winnebago St., Decorah.

The production is open to the public with no charge for admission.

The production is fully-funded by an Imagine Fellowship through the Luther College Center for Ethics and Public Engagement. Radermacher wrote the script, music and lyrics using a 2017 summer research grant through the Luther College Dean’s Office.

Written and directed by Luther senior Timothy Radermacher, “Martin Luther: Monk of Funk” tells a musical version of the Reformation leader as a young priest who questions his faith and finds his musical groove while making new friends and a few enemies.

The performance features Luther sophomore Morgan Fanning as Martin Luther. The cast includes Luther seniors Hunter Prueger as Philip Melanchthon; and Katy Roets, vendor; juniors Xavier Conzet as Albert of Brandenburg; Elliot Douma as Johann Tetzel; Alex Lau as Jerry; and Brenna Sherman as Satan, Prince of Darkness; and first-years Maddy Lomprey as Katharina von Bora; Alex Schlesinger as Pope Leo X; and Nathan Sunde as Brother Schmutzig.

Members of the orchestra are Luther seniors Liam Fraser, trumpet; Tad Guy, percussion; Andrew Murray, guitar; and Chris O’Connell, trombone; junior Garrett O’Connell, piano; sophomore Kate Wyre, alto saxophone; and first-years Zach Mayer, electric bass; and Alonso Zevallos Rubi, tenor saxophone.

Helen Roets, Luther first-year, is serving as choreographer, and the crew is filled out by C. O’Connell, conductor; Sherman, costume designer, and Wyre, production manager.

A second performance is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, at the Blue Water Theatre Company, 605 Rice St. E, Wayzata, Minnesota. The BWTC is a non-profit youth theatre organization founded by Charlie Leonard, Luther class of 2000. Tickets are $8 and can be purchased at www.bluewatertheatre.com.
