Experiential Learning: Why Just Learn About It When You Can Experience It?
What Is Experiential Learning?
Experiential learning is all about getting hands-on and actually applying what you learn in class to real-life situations. It’s a chance to grow—not just academically, but professionally and personally too. Think internships, service projects, undergrad research, or even studying abroad. Instead of just sitting through lectures and taking notes, you’re out there doing the work, reflecting on your experiences, and making the lessons stick in a way that actually feels meaningful.
Why It Matters
- Prepares You for Challenges: Gain problem-solving and communication skills.
- Builds Confidence: Learn from trying new things.
- Bridges Learning and Life: Connect theory to practice.
- Explores Careers: Discover what suits you through real-world experiences.
Examples of Experiential Learning
At Luther, students across all majors get real-life experiences that deepen their understanding and application of their fields. As a first-year social work student, I had the chance to engage in discussions about the prison system and visit a local prison firsthand. This experience gave me a better understanding of what social work really is and how the system works in different parts of the U.S. It also got me thinking: What can a social worker do to improve the system? What can I do to make the world a better place? Seeing the realities of the justice system up close was eye-opening and pushed me to start considering how I can create change in my future career.
Similarly, neuroscience students, along with students from other majors, have the chance to attend professional conferences, gaining exposure to groundbreaking research and valuable networking experiences. For example, neuroscience student Redempta Iratunganye gave a presentation about her research at a recent professional conference. Redempta reflected, “I’d say that the experience was more than I expected. This was my first time presenting in front of professionals in the neuroscience field. I was intimidated but also excited, mainly because our research was interesting and had compelling data. It was exhilarating to share what we’re doing and hear feedback from people who were genuinely interested.”
Luther offers so many ways to get hands-on experience, like J-Term study abroad programs, semester-long options, and internships where you can really dive into your field. As a student, these opportunities make college so much more exciting for me because I get to travel, meet people from all over, and hear some amazing stories about the wild experiences others have had!
