Luther College encourages families to complete FAFSA

DECORAH, IOWA—While college-bound students for Fall 2024 have faced significant challenges with the new Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), Luther College reminds students and their families there is extended time this year to complete paperwork for scholarships which will substantially reduce the cost of going to college.

In a note to the community, Vice President for Enrollment Management Karen Hunt encouraged families who may be discouraged by the new FAFSA form or processing delays to reach out for assistance.

“Delayed release of the FAFSA form and calculations based on the form started the trend, and they are feeding misconceptions about financial aid eligibility,” Hunt said. “Some students may believe they are not eligible for aid or with the confusion surrounding FAFSA may be thinking of postponing or forgoing completing the form.”

Nationwide, there is a decline of roughly 25% in the number of Class of 2024 students who have submitted their FAFSA compared to the Class of 2023. Hunt stressed that Luther, like many colleges, is helping out by continuing to welcome applicants.

“If there is one message we at Luther can convey to potential students and their families it is this: it’s not too late to file your FAFSA for Fall 2024,” Hunt said.
