Use the Digital Microfilm Reader and Scanner

A digital microfilm reader and high resolution scanner are available for all to use in the Microfilm Area on the main floor of Preus Library. The instructions found below are also posted in the microfilm area.

Using the Digital Microfilm Reader

Getting Started

  1. Start the computer and log in.
    1. Luther students, faculty, and staff can use their Norse Key.
    2. Guests must log in with the following:
      Username: .\public
      Password: public
  2. Load microfilm reel on film tray and flip the ST ViewScan power button up to turn on scanner light.
  3. Double-click the ViewScan Premium icon on the computer desktop.

Browsing

  1. Microfilm can be advanced by clicking on the white or red arrows appearing on the screen at the top of the film image, or by pressing the directional buttons located on the film tray.
  2. If necessary, rotate film using the Rotate Right,  Rotate Left, Flip Vertical, and Mirror Image buttons on the computer screen.
  3. Use the Camera Position buttons to resize the film image so that it is comfortable to read, then apply the adjacent Camera Focus buttons as necessary
  4. To improve the appearance of the film, click the Auto Adjust button.

Cropping

  1. Select the Cropping tab.
  2. The mouse cursor now transforms into a crosshairs, which will allow you to select or crop part of the viewable image to save or print.
  3. Select an area of the image by positioning your cursor in one corner of the area you would like to save, click and hold the left mouse button, then drag the mouse diagonally to create a box around the area. Release the mouse button when the box is the appropriate size.
  4. In the bottom left of the screen, select Capture Cropped Area.  A thumbnail image of the region you selected will appear in the image tray at the bottom of the screen.

Saving or Printing

Selecting the File tab gives you the option to print or save the captured images.

To print:

  1. Check the boxes for each image you wish to print.
  2. For most cases, the default printing settings will be appropriate for your image – click the Print button at the top of the screen.
  3. Your printout will sent to the Public copy machine/printer nearest the DVD shelving. See instructions by the printer to finish your print job. (Printouts cost $.10 a side)

To save:

  1. Select File Save from the File menu.
  2. Check the boxes for each image you wish to save.
  3. In the Save to Local PC box, choose where to save your images. The folder icon to the right will allow you to browse for a location.
  4. Choose the format for your image using the Format menu button. For basic use, the default selection (Multi Page PDF) will work well. If you plan to import your file into another image editing utility, select the alternative format most appropriate for you.
  5. Click the Save button at the top of the screen.

Finishing up

  1. When finished, click the “X” in the top right corner to close ViewScan.
  2. Log off by clicking the Windows Start button in the bottom left, then clicking the Shut down button.
  3. Remove the film from the tray.
  4. Flip the microfilm reader switch to the center position to turn off the light.

Using the Scanner

Getting Started

  1. Start the computer and log in.
    1. Luther students, faculty, and staff can use their Norse Key.
    2. Guests must log in with the following:

  2. Turn Epson scanner on by pushing the rectangular button on bottom left of the machine.
  3. Double-click the EPSON Scan icon on the computer desktop.

Loading Document/Image to be Scanned

The Epson scanner can scan opaque (paper) and transparent (slides, negatives) materials. Several trays for loading different types of materials are found in the rack next to the scanner.

Loading Opaque Materials:

  1. Open the scanner lid, and check that the white pad is affixed to the underside of the lid.
  2. Place the material face-down on the scanner bed, and close the lid.

Loading Transparent Materials:

  1. Open the scanner lid, and remove the white pad on the underside of the lid. This will reveal the the scanner’s backlighting.
  2. Place material face-down on the scanner bed, and close the lid.
  3. When finished using the scanner, reattach the white pad to the underside of the lid.

Scanning

EPSON Scan will open in “Home Mode,” which allows the user to easily select the type of material to be scanned, and will apply common default settings. If more advanced control is desired, change to “Professional Mode” in the upper right corner of the EPSON Scan window.

  1. Select the “Document Type” for the material you are scanning.
  2. Adjust “Image Type” and “Destination,” if needed.
  3. Click the “Preview” button.
  4. Review content in the Preview window
  5. Click the “Scan” button from the EPSON Scan window to capture the selected image(s).
  6. Select options for saving your images in the File Save Settings window (see below for more detail).

Saving

The File Save Settings window allows you to select the location and format in which to save your scanned images.

  1. In the “Location” section, choose the folder in which to save the images. Guests may wish to choose “Other,” and select “Desktop” or a removable flash drive from the “Browse” button. Luther community members may wish to choose “Other” and then select their network storage drive.
  2. Choose the format for your image using the “Image Format” menu.  For basic use, the default selection (JPEG) will work well.  If you plan to import your file into another image editing utility, select the alternative format most appropriate for you.
  3. Click the “OK” button at the bottom of the screen.

To print a scanned image, double-click the saved file to open the image in its default application. Image files (JPEG, TIFF, BMP) will open in Windows Photo Viewer.  PDF files will open in Adobe Reader.

  1. Navigate to the printing options within the application (often found under the File menu, or under a separate Print menu).
  2. Adjust print settings as desired, then click the “Print” button.
  3. Your printout will be sent to the Public copier/printer nearest the DVD shelving. See instructions by the printer to finish your print job. (Printouts cost $.10 a side; change is available at the Circulation Desk)

Finishing up

  1. When finished, click the “Close” button in the EPSON Scan window.
  2. Log off the computer by clicking the Windows Start button in the bottom left, then clicking the Shut down button.
