Center Stage Series presents Ray Bradbury's 'Fahrenheit 451'

Luther College presents a theatrical performance of one of the most revered novels of the 20th century, "Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21. "Fahrenheit 451" tells the story of Guy Montag, a fireman living in a dystopian future whose job requires him to set fires to destroy outlawed books in the name of entertainment and human happiness. Because of society's abandonment of knowledge and embracing of easy fun through mass media and drugs, people have become numb, despondent and unthinking, and Montag is instrumental in continuing this trend.

'An Invitation to Learning: The Mind and the Internet' Pulitzer Prize nominee Nicholas Carr to give Luther's Spring Convocation address and Farwell Distinguished Lecture Feb. 6

Pulitzer Prize finalist Nicholas Carr will give the lecture "An Invitation to Learning: The Mind and the Internet" at the Luther College Spring Convocation at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 6. For those unable to attend, the convocation lecture will be streamed live online at: http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/lutheradmin.portal#. Carr will also give the Farwell Distinguished Lecture "Is Google Making Us Stupid? How Technology Shapes Our Thoughts" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day lecture Jan. 20 at Luther College

Henry J. Richardson, professor of law at Temple University Beasley School of Law and renowned international human rights attorney, will give this year's Martin Luther King Jr. Day lecture at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20 in the Valders Hall of Science, Room 206. His lecture, "From Birmingham's Jail to beyond the Riverside Church: Martin Luther King Jr.'s Global Authority," follows a day-long series of readings from King's "Letter from Birmingham Jail."

Mission Guatemala hosts Winter Carnival at Luther Jan. 25

Luther College invites the Decorah community to escape the winter cold for a morning of family fun and learning at the Mission Guatemala Winter Carnival fundraiser from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 25 in Luther's Regents Center. The event, for children in preschool through elementary school, boasts inflatable rides, bounce houses, face painting, carnival games and prizes. Tickets and carnival food will be available for purchase to benefit Mission Guatemala.
