The Luther women’s tennis team finished out the Midwest Invite by facing off with Kenyon and came away with the first victory of the weekend, defeating the Ladies by a 5-1 margin.  Kenyon entered the match at No. 14 in the Central Region while Luther is currently sitting at No. 17.  The victory improves Luther’s overall record to 16-10 for the season.

Elise Allen and Katy Lindstrom made quick work of Lydia Winkler and Samantha Betts in an (8-1) victory, giving Luther its first point of the weekend and a 1-0 lead early in the match.  Cami Czech and Katie Howe picked up a late break and were (8-5) winners at No. 1 over Amy Schlessman and Amanda Polster, making it 2-0 in favor of the Norse.  Cassandra Chalhoub and Lola White-Baer were up a break and serving at 7-6, 40-0 but were unable to close out the match, eventually trailing 7-8.  The duo responded with a break of their own to force a tie-breaker and came away with a (9-8 (5)) victory over Abigail Younger and Anna Becker, putting Luther ahead 3-0.

All six singles matches took to the courts and Luther earned four first set victories.  Kenyon picked up its lone point with a straight set victory at No. 2, but Chalhoub defeated Winkler (6-0, 6-3) at No. 3 to make it a 4-1 margin.  White-Baer clinched the win for Luther with a (6-2, 6-4) decision over Carly Bond at No. 4.  When the match was stopped, Czech was still in her first set and led Schlessman 6-5 in another match-up of rated players.  Katie Howe led (6-2, 4-5) at No. 5 while Adriana DePaolis was in the driver’s seat with a (6-3, 4-1) advantage at No. 6.

Luther will return to action with another match-up against a nationally ranked foe when Carleton visits Decorah on Saturday, April 14.
