A tight match between Luther and Coe came down to the final spot before the Kohawks prevailed 5-4, halting a brief two match winning streak for the Norse. Luther lost for the first time in IIAC play, falling to 8-3 overall and 5-1 in the IIAC.
Lola White-Baer and Katie Howe played another quality match together, winning (8-1) at No. 3 over Jordan Ferree and Elizabeth Hoffmann. Coe knotted the score with a lopsided victory at No. 2 doubles and then took the lead when Michelle Schupbach and Tai Lucero earned a late break of serve and won the final three games to edge Luther’s Cami Czech and Katy Lindstrom by an (8-5) score at No. 1.
The Kohawk lead grew to 3-1 when Schupbach beat Czech (6-2, 6-0) at No. 1, but Elise Allen got the Norse back in contention with a (6-3, 6-3) win against Sara Ohlman at No. 3 singles, improving to 9-0 in singles on the season. Coe extended its advantage to 4-2 when Lucero held off a charge from Luther’s Cassandra Chalhoub in the second set, winning (6-0, 6-3).
Needing to win the final three matches to win the meet, Adriana DePaolis kept the Norse alive with a (6-2, 4-6, (10-5)) win at No. 6 against Hoffmann. Lindstrom also won her match at No. 5 singles in a third set super tie-breaker, edging Ferree (7-6 (3), 3-6, (10-4)) to level the match at 4-4. White-Baer went back and forth with Coe’s Jackie Pedersen at No. 4, but Pedersen came out on top (6-4, 7-5) to earn the road win for the Kohawks.
Luther will now take a break from dual meet competition to participate in the ITA Regional Tournament in St. Peter, Minnesota. The Norse will take 10 players to the event, which begins on Friday, September 23.
