|Date:||February 8, 2014|
|Location:||Green Bay, Wis.|
The Luther College men’s tennis team opened its spring season with a win over Augustana (IL) in a battle of regionally ranked teams at the Western Racquet and Fitness Club in Green Bay, Wis. A come-from-behind victory at No. 2 doubles turned the momentum and the Norse nearly swept the singles matches on the way to a 7-2 decision.
After the Vikings secured the first point of the match with a convincing win at No. 1 doubles, the Norse leveled the score with an (8-2) victory from Torstein Jystad and Isaiah Mayerchak over Connor Woolf and Austin Schoeck at No. 3. Ramesh Karki and Kyle Appel rallied from being down a break on two different occasions and finally broke through with a service break and a hold to finish out a (9-7) win over Kevin Bayles and Collin Arnold at No. 2.
Leading 2-1, Mayerchak finished with a flurry by taking nine of the last 10 games at No. 6 singles, winning (6-4, 6-1) over Grant Wick to give the Norse its third point of the day. Jystad was a (6-3, 6-2) winner over Andy Wall at No. 2, avenging a third set super tie-breaker defeat from a year ago. James Ayer quickly followed with a hard fought (6-4, 6-4) win over Woolf at No. 5, securing the victory for the Norse. The Vikings tallied another point when Bayles held off Appel by a (6-4, 3-6, (11-9)) margin at No. 3, but Matt Bellio bounced right back for Luther by defeating Arnold (3-6, 6-3, (11-9)) at No. 4. Bellio rallied from an 8-3 deficit in the third set super tie-breaker to earn the Norse its sixth point. Karki battled with Lawrence Palmer into another third set super tie-breaker at No. 1, eventually prevailing (7-6 (4), 3-6, (10-6)) to round out the scoring.
