No. 5 Luther remained perfect sweeping Coe in Cedar Rapids this afternoon 5-4, 3-2. The two wins gives the Norse an Iowa Conference record of 4-0, 24-0 overall. Coe fell to 1-3 in league play, 15-11 overall.
In game one, the Norse held a 5-0 lead heading in the bottom of the seventh. Coe's Maliah Figg made things interesting hitting a two-out grand slam home run. One batter later, Paige Zahner hit a shot to deep right field that was pulled in by Lindsey Uphoff at the warning track to end the game.
The Norse took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, following back-to-back RBI doubles by Ashley Burrows and Anna Strien. The Norse added three more runs in the sixth thanks to an RBI double by Miranda McCay and a two-run single by Katie Wieland.
Amanda Witzlib (11-0) went the distance in the circle. Witzlib spread 10 hits, did not issue a walk and struck out eight.
In the nightcap, Luther did all of its damage in the second and third innings. The Norse scored two in the second when Strien produced a two-out double to center field that scored Carli Radil and Burrows. In the third, McCay started the inning with a double to right-center, followed by what proved to be the game winning hit, a triple by Hiliary Pennington to left field. Coe pulled to within one run in the sixth scoring twice on three hits.
Topanga Skiles (7-0) went the distance in the circle allowing two runs on six hits. She faced 27 batters, walked one and struck out four. Twelve of Coe's outs were ground balls to the infield.
Luther will return to action on Monday, April 6 when it will host UW-Stevens Point for a non-conference doubleheader that will begin at 3:00 p.m.
