Center Stage Series: Thomanerchor Leipzig to perform at Luther College Nov. 18

The community is invited for the rare opportunity to hear Thomanerchor Leipzig, the St. Thomas Choir of Leipzig once directed by J. S. Bach, as part of Luther College's Center Stage Series.

Established in 1212, representing more than 800 years of musical tradition, the iconic Thomanerchor Leipzig will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, in Luther's Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. The concert is part of the choir's larger tour celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.

Tickets, on sale in Luther's Ticket Office, are $35 for adults, $33 for seniors age 65 and older and $15 for youth ages 4-18, and may be purchased online at or via the Luther Ticket Office, (563) 387-1357 or [email protected] Ticket Office hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 9-10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.-3 p.m.; Tuesday 9 a.m.-3 p.m.; with extended hours on Thursdays, 9 a.m.-7 p.m.

The St. Thomas Choir is the oldest cultural establishment of the city of Leipzig, only 50 years younger than the city itself. Through the influence of many St. Thomas Cantors, including Bach from 1723-1750, Leipzig and the St. Thomas Church have become the center of Protestant church music.

The New York Times described the choir saying "the tender, clear sound of the sopranos and altos had uncanny carrying power," and "surely this is what it must have been like to hear Bach lead the ensemble in one of his cantatas."

Made up of 53 boys ranging in age from 10-18, The St. Thomas Choir continues as a major institution in Germany. With close ties to the St. Thomas Church, they perform there weekly as well as on church holidays and the annual performances of Bach's passions; the Christmas Oratorio and the Mass in B Minor.
