No genre of music is off limits in the world of a cappella and Vocalosity covers them all – from 10th century Gregorian chant and classical choral to barber shop quartet and bouncing doo-wop all the way to an exploration of the current sound of a cappella with music from The Beatles, Bruno Mars and more. Combine that with direction and choreography from Sean Curran ("Stomp" original cast member) and you have an exhilarating evening of song unlike anything ever seen or heard, live on stage.
Luther's Campus Programming department is holding a contest for one a capella group to perform as the opening act for Vocalosity. The winning group also receives complimentary tickets to the performance. To enter, the groups should record themselves singing a 1-2 minute musical arrangement of any contemporary song, upload it to YouTube and email the link to [email protected] Three finalists will be chosen and their videos will be judged by the creative team of Vocalosity. Submission deadline is Sept. 26.
Vocalosity, consisting of 10 dynamic voices, debuted in January 2016 before embarking on a 30+ city national tour. Vocalosity came together through the passion of music director and artistic producer Deke Sharon and the producing team of Work Light Productions and IMG Artists.
"Over the past few years, a cappella has grown from what was once considered a stuffy Ivy League activity to a pop culture phenomenon beloved by people of all ages," says Sharon, who served as on-site music director and vocal producer for the smash hit films "Pitch Perfect" and "Pitch Perfect 2" and as vocal producer of NBC's "The Sing-Off." Hailed as "the father of contemporary a cappella" by Entertainment Weekly, Sharon has built a career in a cappella as a singer, arranger, director and producer. Vocalosity is the culmination of everything he has learned over the past 20 years in this genre.
