Guest artist performance in dance and theater: Nick Bryson in residence April 21-24

Nick Bryson, co-artistic director of Legitimate Bodies Dance Company based in Birr Theatre & Arts Centre in County Offaly, Ireland, will complete a residency at Luther College April 21-24.

Bryson's workshop will take place from 6:30-9:30 Sunday, April 21, through Tuesday, April 23. He will also teach two classes while on campus and hold a performance at 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 24 in Studio II in the Center for the Arts on the Luther campus.

The performance includes a piece created out of a workshop "Body Points (of Departure)," held during Bryson's residency, a solo by Bryson and a duo performance with Bryson's colleague Jeff Wallace.

The duo's performance "Balls of Receptivity" is a dance and juggling work they created at a contemporary dance festival in Mexico a year ago. The piece rounds off a collection of works that toy with the relationship between self-mockery and expansiveness.

"Body Points (of Departure)" is an exploration of expansiveness and waiting for expansiveness with dancers. This is Bryson's current topic of research.

Through the workshop, Bryson will ask, "How does a trained or training dancer come to a space that is a somatic and over-ridingly concerned with the felt sense and attunement to self?" The aim in answering this question is to make art in the studio that is reflective of judgment and inclusion through group reflection.

Bryson has extensive experience in dance improvisation; including time spent with Daghdha Dance Company and his own company co-directed by Cristina Goletti. He has an international profile, working with groups in places such as Europe, Ireland and Mexico.

Wallace has taught and performed at universities, festivals and performance venues across the U.S., Latin America, Europe, Asia and the Nordic countries. He says contact improvisation, contemporary dance, physical theater, his training as a percussionist and his daily life influence him.
