Sept. 4, 2009

Tammy Petro, instructor at the University of Iowa, will present a Luther College Vocation Program lecture titled “Future Perfect, Sustainability in Art and Design” Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. in Room 102 of the Franklin W. Olin Building on the campus of Luther College.

Petro has a wide range of expertise from engineering to psychology to design. She has guided the innovation process, provided strategic project management, and designed services and graphics that positively impact the daily lives of thousands of people. She strives to inspire students and companies to creatively generate new ideas that balance long term goals with short term needs.

“Some people call it sustainability,” says Petro, “but I like to think of it as more than a buzzword. I devote my time to teaching and designing responsibly, and have found that personal meaning and money can both come from work.”

Petro, a graduate of the University of Iowa, now lives in Iowa City, Iowa. She holds the master of fine arts in three-dimensional design and the bachelor of arts in psychology from the University of Iowa.

She has worked on projects for EA Games, the National Security Agency and Reuters.

Her work with the Hippo Project is an example of innovative design and ethical dedication to her work. She designed round water jugs that transport water in South Africa easily over long distances. She is constantly using her artistic talents in attempt to impact the world positively.
