Luther College to celebrate Homecoming Oct. 16-18

Luther College will celebrate Homecoming 2015 Friday through Sunday, Oct. 16-18, bringing more than 5,000 students, alumni and friends of the college to the Luther campus for class reunions, sporting events, music, dance, theater and other events.

Luther College Homecoming Concert Oct. 18

Featuring the college's premiere touring ensembles, the Luther College Homecoming Concert is 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall on the Luther campus. The concert includes performances by the Luther Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Daniel Baldwin; Concert Band, conducted by Joan deAlbuquerque; and Nordic Choir, conducted by Allen Hightower.

Luther alumni siblings' mixed-media works on display Oct. 16-Dec. 6

Inspired in part by the history, culture and geography of South Africa, Luther College alumni siblings Elsa (Otte) Hammond, Paul Otte and Daniel Otte will present a mixed-media exhibit Oct. 16-Dec. 6 in the upper level foyer of the Center for Faith and Life on the Luther College campus. A reception for the artists will be held 11 a.m.-noon Saturday, Oct. 17, in the upper level foyer of the Center for Faith and Life as part of Luther Homecoming.

Luther College announces lawn-spraying day

Luther College will spray the lawns with herbicides to provide well-maintained, visually attractive grounds for Luther students, employees and visitors and to control undesirable weeds on athletic fields. Weather permitting, the date for spraying is the evening of Friday, Oct. 9, with Saturday, Oct. 10 and Sunday, Oct. 11, set as back up days as needed.

Luther's Book Shop presents book signings during homecoming

The Luther College Book Shop will host book-signing sessions Saturday, Oct. 17, as part of Luther's homecoming weekend of events. Six members of the Luther community including Doug Eckheart, Luther professor emeritus of art; Allisa (Vanderpool) Vermillion, class of 1990; Chris Norton, class of 2014; Robert Shedinger, Luther professor of religion; Todd Green, Luther associate professor of religion; and Tabita Green, Luther director of web content; will sign copies of their books at the Book Shop located in the Dahl Centennial Union on Luther's campus.

Luther College presents 'Love and Information' by Caryl Churchill

Luther College's Visual and Performing Art department presents the play "Love and Information" by Caryl Churchill and directed by Bob Larson. The performances, held in the Jewel Theatre in the Center for the Arts on the Luther campus, are at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15; 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16; and 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17.

Luther College opera alumni to host career talks

Talking about their experiences at Luther College and their path into professional singing careers, Luther alumni Andrew Stenson and Emily Fons will be presenting career talks at Luther in October. Stenson, class of 2008, will speak at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, and Fons, class of 2006, will speak at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 15. Both career talks will be held in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music on the Luther campus.

Luther donors support new Regents Center video board display

Thanks to a generous leadership gift from Kent, Luther College class of 1957, and Mitzi Evenstad of Monona, Wisconsin, Luther has purchased an indoor LED video display board and statistic panels with electronic captions to enhance the existing scoreboard in the Regents Center gymnasium.

Beth Lynch and Mary Lewis will receive the 2015 Lawrence and Eula Hagie Heritage Award given by the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation Nov. 13.

Lynch, Lewis win statewide conservation award

Beth Lynch, Luther associate professor of biology, and Mary Lewis, Luther professor of biology-emerita, were named winners of the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation's 2015 Lawrence and Eula Hagie Heritage Award. The duo will receive their awards at a ceremony in Decorah on Friday, Nov. 13.
