“This Is the Route of My Forefathers”: The 1837 Ioway Map

All are welcome to this presentation and conversation with archaeologist and author William Green about his recent book, “This Is the Route of My Forefathers”: The 1837 Ioway Map. The book documents the history of the map and its role in recounting Iowa tribal history and asserting tribal land claims at the height of the Indian removal era. Green and archaeologist Colin Betts will discuss the roles of Native mapmaking and oral traditions, historical documents, and archaeology in documenting the deep connections of the Iowa Tribe to the Midwest generally, and northeast Iowa in particular.
