About

Dr. Schlaerth received his PhD in sociology from the University of Miami, where he studied social theory, statistics and methods, race and ethnicity, and social psychology. His research has been published in national and international journals, as well as in several edited books. His current research interests include involuntary celibates (aka – incels), political identity in online dating, labor organizing in higher education, and political theory. His edited book, A Multi-Disciplinary Approach to Studying Involuntary Celibates: Understanding Incels is set to come out in 2026.

In Iowa Christian lives with his silver tabby, Elvis, and when he is not in Iowa he spends his time in Miami with his partner, step daughter, and pets. Born in Buffalo, New York, he is an avid fan of all Buffalo sports teams.

In his spare time he is a competitive power lifter, having won the ADFPF Modern Raw Masters 2 Iowa state championship in 2025. Before that he spent 20 years as a rugby player, having played in Syracuse, NY and in Miami, FL, but has retired due to injuries.
