Luther prairie burn preserves natural ecosystem

Faculty and students of the Luther College biology department conducted a prescribed burn in parts of the college’s Anderson Prairie and Hickory Ridge Woods on Wednesday, March 31, in an effort to maintain and restore the area’s natural ecosystems.

Potting party

Students hold potting party to add plants, improve air on campus

Feb. 26, 2010

More than 60 Luther College students participated in the Feb. 20 Luther Sustainability Potting Party, potting live clippings from campus plants in recycled containers for other students to grow in their residence hall rooms. The plants will improve air quality in campus living spaces and add a touch of beauty to student rooms.

Luther campus printing significantly reduced using GoPrint

The difference between using a resources wastefully or sustainably can sometimes be paper thin. Luther College has significantly reduced its printing paper use in the 2009-10 academic year due to the college’s implementation of the GoPrint print management solution in January 2009.

Luther vermicomposters

Luther brings vermicomposting to residence halls

Ask Luther College students, “What is the Diet of Worms?” and they may explain it was the assembly in 1521 in Germany at which Martin Luther refused to recant his writings, stated “Here I stand.  I can do no other,” and inspired the Protestant Reformation. Or they may say “fruits and vegetables.”  

Luther students have started disposing of fruit and vegetable waste in worm composting bins installed Jan. 15 in seven of Luther’s residence halls by students from the Luther Sustainability program.
