Feb. 22, 2010

Joe Thompson, Luther College director of athletics, has announced that Cindy Fredrick has accepted the position of head volleyball coach.

Coach Fredrick takes over the Luther volleyball program with an impressive resume that includes 23 years as a head coach at the NCAA Division I level.

After serving three years (1982-85) as an assistant coach at the University of Iowa, Fredrick began her collegiate head coaching career at Weber State University, a position she held from 1985-89. During her final year, she was named Big Sky Coach of the Year after leading Weber State to a record of 32-8, a Big Sky Conference championship and a trip to NCAA National Tournament.

From 1989-2004 she was the head coach at Washington State University, where she led her teams to seven 20-plus-win seasons. Her teams made nine appearances in the NCAA National Tournament, including one trip to the Sweet 16 and two trips to the Elite 8. She coached three All-Americans, 17 all-Pac 10 performers and one Pac 10 Player of the Year. In 1995 she was named Pac 10 Coach of the Year and District 8 Coach of the Year.

Fredrick returned to the University of Iowa and served as head coach from 2004-08. Following the 2008 campaign, she resigned to become the Assistant Director of the Wartburg-Waverly Sports and Wellness Center.

Prior to her Division I coaching career, Fredrick served as head volleyball coach at Davenport Central High School from 1974-82. In 1981, her team won the state championship with a perfect record of 33-0.

Joining Coach Fredrick as assistant coach will be her husband, Mashallah Farokhmanesh, who has been her top assistant and recruiting coordinator throughout her entire career. Coach Farokhmanesh has served as the assistant coach at Wartburg College since 2008.

"I want to thank President Torgerson and Joe Thompson for the honor of leading the Luther volleyball program,” stated coach Fredrick. “Luther's combination of a rich athletic tradition, very high academic standards and a beautiful campus was what drew me to the position. My husband, Mashallah, and I look forward to continue building the Norse volleyball program into an Iowa Conference contender and national-level program. I am very excited to return to coaching at such a high-quality college with great leadership."

"We are excited to have Cindy join the Luther College community and assume the leadership of the volleyball program,” commented Joe Thompson. “She is one of the premier volleyball coaches in the country, and she has achieved tremendous success in her coaching career. We are also pleased to have her husband, Mashallah, join the volleyball staff as an assistant coach. These two bring tremendous knowledge and enthusiasm to our program, and we are confident they will propel the program to great heights."
