Heiruspecs, a six-member instrumental hip-hop group from the Midway neighborhood of St. Paul, Minn., is best known for its live performances. In contrast to many hip-hop groups that use sampling and turntables, Heiruspecs emphasizes a raw, live sound that comes from their roots in the local scene.
The six-member group is comprised of Wilbour (Chris Wilbourn), vocals; Maud’ Dib (Jon Harrison II), vocals and beat box; Twinklejingles (Sean McPherson), bass and guitar; dVRG (Devon Gray), keyboard; Peter Leggett, drums; and Josh Peterson, guitar.
Formed in 1997 when the Felix and McPherson were attending St. Paul Central High School, the groups released its first CD, “Live From The Studio” in 1998, followed by “Antidisestablishmetabolism” in 2000, “Small Steps” in 2002 and “A Tiger Dancing” in 2004.
Their album “10 Years Strong,” released in 2007, is a compilation of new and old songs, and their latest album, “Heiruspecs,” was released in December 2008. The Minneapolis Star-Tribune called the 2008 release “the band’s funkiest masterpiece.”
City Pages featured the group in the cover article of the newspaper’s Dec. 3, 2008, edition and named Heiruspecs the best live artist in the Twin Cities. In recognition of the group’s contribution to hip-hop music, St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman declared Dec. 22, 2008 “HeiruspecsDay” in St. Paul.
