Luther College receives $2,000 grant

Luther College received a grant of $2,000 from the American Legion of Iowa Foundation

Luther College received a grant of $2,000 from the American Legion of Iowa Foundation in support of scholarships for veterans.  Foundation representative Ivan Torkelson (right) presented the grant check to Keith Christensen, vice president for development, and Jeanie Lovell, director of corporate and foundation relations.  The American Legion of Iowa Foundation scholarships help address the growing need for support of veterans currently serving or returning from recent service.  Luther has nearly 1,350 alumni veterans, 530 of whom are living alumni.

Brooke Joyce and Steve Smith, co-curators of the Sept. 29 "Music in the Shape of a Pear" concert

Luther's ‘Music in the Shape of a Pear’ concert series features music from 1973

The “Music in the Shape of a Pear” concert begins at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29 in the Noble Recital Hall featuring concert music by several artists as well as popular music from 1973 by Pink Floyd, Marvin Gaye, ZZ Top and others. Luther composition instructors Brooke Joyce and Steve Smith, co-curators of the concert, were both born in 1973, so the concert serves as a 40th birthday celebration for them.

Luther College presents Family Weekend concert Sept. 21

Luther's music department will present an evening of choral and instrumental music at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, as part of Family Weekend activities. Seven ensembles will perform, including Aurora, Cantorei, Cathedral Choir, Collegiate Chorale, Norsemen, Wind and Percussion Ensemble and Varsity Band.

‘For Those Who Eat Food: Your Perishable Future’

John Ikerd, professor emeritus of agricultural economics at the University of Missouri Columbia, will give a guest lecture about the so-called success of the American food system at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, in Room 206 of Valders Hall of Science on the Luther campus.

Dan Davis

Luther's Professor Davis completes third deep-sea excursion in three years

Dan Davis, Luther College assistant professor of classics, recently returned from his third deep-sea excursion in as many years. Most deep-water surveys incur massive costs to the tune of $50,000 per day. After sailing with National Geographic for two months during the summer of 2012, Davis set out to demonstrate that the same kinds of data can be collected for a fraction of that cost, while still involving students and serving as a teaching endeavor.
