'Displacement, Fear and Hope: The Impermanence of Place for Syrian Refugees'

For decades, Syria was a stable, though repressive, Middle Eastern dictatorship, much like many other states in the region. In 2010, stability gave way to a civil war, which triggered a massive outflow of refugees. Michael Engelhardt, Luther College professor of political science, and Deborah Norland, Luther College professor of education, will discuss the flight of Syrian refugees from their homeland at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall on the Luther campus.

Faculty and students present final SONG JAM April 4

Bringing a close to nine years of unique performances, the final SONG JAM, part of a performance series devoted to art song by women composers, will take place at 5:15 p.m. Monday, April 4, in the Recital Hall of the Center for Faith and Life on the Luther campus. This performance, open to the public with no charge for admission, features pieces by composers Cécile Chaminade, Nadia Boulanger, Pauline Viardot-Garcia, Lita Grier, Judith Cloud, Mary Howe and Madeleine Dring.

'Asking For It'

Kate Harding, author of bestseller "Asking For It: The Alarming Rise of Rape Culture-and What We Can Do About It," will give a lecture of the same name at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, in Valders Hall of Science Room 206 on the Luther College campus. In addition, Harding will hold a discussion at 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 30 at Luther's Women and Gender Equality Center, 405 High St. Both events are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Women, Faith and Finance seminar April 8 in Decorah

Area women of all ages have an opportunity to learn more about financial management, retirement and estate planning, and charitable giving at the 12th annual Women, Faith and Finance seminar on Friday, April 8. Hosted by Luther College, the one-day educational seminar will be presented 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hotel Winneshiek in Decorah. The program is open to the public.

Delta Rae to perform at Luther College April 1

American folk-rock band Delta Rae will perform at Luther College at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 1, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. Midwest native Chris Bathgate will open the show with his acoustic melodies. In addition to several European tours, he has also released five albums, including his most recent and prominent album "Salt Year" in 2011. Bathgate has toured extensively throughout the United States, including performances at SXSW and on National Public Radio's Tiny Desk concert series. Bathgate released his EP, "Old Factory" in early February 2016.
