‘For Those Who Eat Food: Your Perishable Future’

John Ikerd to present guest lecture Sept. 22

John Ikerd, professor emeritus of agricultural economics at the University of Missouri Columbia, will give a guest lecture about the so-called success of the American food system at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, in Room 206 of Valders Hall of Science on the Luther campus.

His lecture, "For Those Who Eat Food: Your Perishable Future," is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Ikerd will discuss how today's generation of young people cannot afford to ignore the obvious problems with the growing concerns about the American food system. He will explain how obesity will be the eventual tipping point of public concern.  Ikerd argues that the current epidemic in obesity and other health- and diet-related problems are symptoms of an unstable food system.

To create a sustainable food system, Ikerd suggests, we must be willing to make purposeful, intentional decisions that reflect a social and ethical responsibility for each other and for the future of humanity.

Ikerd grew up on a small dairy farm in southwest Missouri and has received his bachelor's, master’s and doctoral degrees in agricultural economics from the University of Missouri. He worked in private industry for a time and then spent 30 years in various professional positions at four universities before retiring in 2000. He has published five books and has written two free online books that can be found on his personal website, www.johnikerd.com.
