Luther College has launched m.luther.edu, a website specifically designed for mobile communication devices.
The new mobile website features links to the Luther College Admissions Office, providing campus maps, tours and directions to campus. The mobile website also has links to Luther's cafeteria menu, events calendar, lab computer availability, a "caf cam" that shows the number of diners in the cafeteria, and several other easy-to-use applications, links and features.
The mobile website was prompted by the overwhelming number of visits the Luther College website is receiving from mobile devices, said Rob Larson, Luther executive director of communications and marketing.
"Over nine percent of the website's recent traffic has been from mobile devices, and this proportion is growing rapidly," said Larson. "The new website has been designed with the user in mind, giving the most trafficked areas features on the new mobile web."
The application was designed by Aaron Burk, project manager and lead designer for the mobile website. He created most of the design work and did the software programming as an LIS intern.
"Aaron's work is amazing," said Larson. "By having a student take the lead in design and planning, the results are much more responsive to students' usage needs."
Larson said m.luther.edu is a dynamic website that will evolve with other updates to Luther College's website.
A collaboration of Luther Publications and Library Information Services, the website is the first phase of an overall web update. It is the first public component of the updated site that is scheduled for launch in October.
"Looking forward, we hope this will enhance the campus experience," said Larson. "The updates will hopefully lead to a richer college experience for students, alumni and the entire Luther community."
