Photo by alumna Katy Fiedler selected as runner-up in ‘Best Shot’ photo contest

A photo by Katy Fiedler, a Luther College alumna from Edina, Minn., has been selected as the runner-up in the ‘Best Shot’ photo contest sponsored by and the National Geographic Society.

Of 1,300 photo contest entries, 31 received honors.

Fiedler, the daughter of Bob and Carol Fiedler of Edina, is a 2008 Luther graduate. She majored in elementary education and Spanish. While at Luther she had many opportunities to travel.

“I’ve been blessed with some incredible glimpses of life, views of the world which have changed my worldview,” Fiedler said.

Fiedler is currently working as an AmeriCorps Promise Fellow, splitting time between the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge, Funky Minds Non-profit, and East Union Elementary. She is also an assistant cross-country coach and Nordic skiing coach at her alma mater, Edina High School. and the National Geographic Society sponsored the photo contest. is a nonprofit organization aimed at sharing the overseas study experience. Their mission is to “encourage young people to care about other cultures, change the way they think about the overseas experience, and challenge them to explore real life abroad.”

Throughout January and December, some of Fielder’s international experience photos were on display at Sebastian Joe’s Ice Cream Café in Linden Hills, Minn. They are currently on display at Auburn Homes and Services in Chaska, Minn.
