Alumnus Eric Melear joins staff of Vienna opera house

March 30, 2010

Eric Melear, a 1995 graduate of Luther College, will join the music staff of the Vienna State Opera, Wiener Staatsoper, in September.

Wiener Staatsoper is one of the busiest opera houses in the world, producing between 50 and 60 operas per year in approximately 200 performances.

Melear, a resident of Houston, Texas, holds the bachelor of arts degree in music and mathematics from Luther College and the master’s degree in music from the University of Michigan.

Melear has prepared more than 40 productions at Houston Grand Opera and Wolf Trap Opera, conducted with both companies and with the L.A. Opera Domingo/Thornton Young Artists. He has worked with such renowned artists as Frederica von Stade, Ramón Vargas and Joyce DiDonato.

Melear will also conduct Rossini’s “Il turco in Italia” with Wolf Trap Opera this summer. This will be his second time conducting a full production for Wolf Trap, after leading a critically acclaimed production of Handel’s “Alcina” in 2008.
