The Luther College Environmental Education class will host a Discovery Day on the college’s campus Saturday, Nov. 7, 12 - 2:30 p.m.
Discovery Day is open to all students in kindergarten through sixth grade interested in having fun in the outdoors and learning new skills. Students will participate in four short environmentally focused activities that will inspire wonder and curiosity about the outdoors.
Pre-registration is required. Contact Emily Neal, Luther director of environmental outreach (email [email protected] or telephone (563) 387-2138) to register. The registration fee of $3 covers all Discovery Day materials and a snack.
“Discovery Day engages students in the outdoors and provides a unique mentorship between college students and young people,” said Neal, who teaches the college’s environmental education course.
Previous Discovery Day activities have included learning about animal adaptations, including camouflage, making natural plant dyes, predator/prey relationships, insect investigations and much more.
Neal said Discovery Day is a great opportunity to combine community service and education through outdoor experience.
“It’s great getting hands-on field experience with kids that broadens my teaching skills,” says Luther student and Discovery Day instructor Sarah Baeverstad.
Students in Luther’s environmental education classes blend educational research on teaching young people with factual information about environmental science to provide children with exciting, entertaining and informative lessons. The course curriculum stresses the need for community connections that offer today’s youth more outdoor activities to learn about the natural world.
Discovery Day instructors and mentors are Luther students who have studied Iowa’s natural history and have read and discussed literature related to outdoor education including Richard Louv’s “Last Child in the Woods” and selected writings of Rachel Carsen and David Sobel.
