Faculty Artist Series: John Cord to perform trumpet recital March 4

John Cord, Luther College assistant professor of music, will perform a trumpet recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 4, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall on the Luther campus. The recital will feature collaborations with Luther music faculty members Jon Ailabouni, Rebecca Boehm Shaffer, Du Huang, Kathryn Reed, Michael Smith, Cole Tutino and Benjamin Yates. "Seven Spanish Folksongs" features guest classical guitarist Robert Dunn, from the University of Northern Iowa.

Luther College will host the 68th annual Dorian Band Festival Feb. 28-29. High school band students from approximately 100 schools, nominated by their high school directors, stay on campus for the chance to experience Luther, rehearse with music faculty and perform in concert.

For more than 25 centuries the poems of Sappho—the first female writer in literary history—were all but unknown. A few brief quotations preserved by ancient Greek and Roman authors kept readers wanting more throughout the ages. Philip Freeman's "Searching for Sappho: The Lost Songs and World of the First Woman Poet," provides readers with translation and interpretation of all of Sappho's surviving poetry.
