Student Composition Recital May 9

Student Composition Recital features 9 original works

Luther College will host an evening of new music composed by members of Luther's composition studio. Out of the 18 student composers in this semester's composition studio, five students have been selected to present their pieces at 9 p.m. Monday, May 9, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall. Works to be performed include solo, chamber and electronic music with video.

Luther College junior Caleb Anderson of Rockford, Illinois, received a Rossing Physics Scholarship Honorable Mention award in the amount of $5,000 for the 2016-17 academic year. The scholarship is highly competitive and is awarded annually to physics students of exceptional merit through the Thomas D. Rossing Fund for Physics Education.

Molly Wilker, Luther College assistant professor of chemistry

Wilker discovers way to revolutionize renewable energy

On April 22, Molly Wilker, Luther assistant professor of chemistry, published a paper in the journal Science that could revolutionize renewable energy. Wilker, working last year with a team of researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder in conjunction with the Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Utah State University and Montana State University, discovered a way to convert nitrogen to ammonia—the main ingredient in chemical fertilizer—using sunlight.

Directors and performers of Luther College's "Body of Water" project are thrilled to welcome their collaborators, the Bluestem Institute, to Decorah on Friday, April 29. The Bluestem Institute is a unique educational program at Ames High School where students perform a year-long service-learning project while receiving credits in English, environmental science, government and sociology.
