The Luther men’s tennis team opened its home triangular with a 9-0 sweep over Buena Vista. The victory improves the Norse to 17-5 overall and 6-0 in the IIAC.
Tyler Van Heest and Sam Cychosz got things off to a great start with a (8-1) decision over Adam Gustad and Jason Ehrhardt at No. 1 doubles. The other two doubles matches were much more competitive, but the Norse were able to pull out a pair of (8-5) wins. Joe LaFountaine and Matt Knutson defeated Keifer Nevius and Cole Renken at No. 2 while Aaron Ford and Brian Kurtz upended Kyle Shade and Justin Buzzard at No. 3. It was the first career varsity win for Kurtz.
Van Heest and Knutson also put together dominating performances in singles, each only dropping one game while winning (6-1, 6-0). Van Heest beat Nevius at No. 4 with Knutson nailing down the victory against Renken at No. 5. Cole Heule also picked up his first varsity win of the year with a (7-5, 6-0) win over Christian Price. Heule trailed 4-5 in the opening set before rattling off nine straight games.
Gendron stepped into the top singles position for the first time this year and knocked off Gustad (7-5, 6-3) in a hard fought match. Tyler Zinnecker notched a singles win with a (6-2, 6-4) win against Mike Sporer at No. 2. LaFountaine won the final six games of the second set to beat Ehrhardt (6-3, 6-3) at No. 3 to complete the sweep.
