The Luther College men’s tennis team, ranked No. 11 in the Central Region, opened its spring schedule with a pair of victories today at the Winona Tennis Center in Winona, Minnesota. The Norse kicked-off the season with a 9-0 sweep over Milwaukee School of Engineering.
Tyler Zinnecker and Aaron Gendron tallied the first point of the day for Luther with an (8-0) win at No. 2 doubles over Jeff Scarpelli and Eric Klamrowski. Scott Sundstrom and Quinn Foley followed quickly with a decisive (8-1) decision at No. 1, defeating Juan Montenegro and Nick Matsura. Joe LaFountaine and James Ayer pulled away in the second half of the match to earn an (8-4) win against Matt Slaughter and Zach Dam at No. 3 doubles, giving the Norse a commanding 3-0 lead heading into singles play.
Luther controlled the action in all six matches, winning in straight sets at each spot while only dropping a total of 11 games. Sundstrom, ranked No. 18 in the Central Region, took care of business at No. 1 with a (6-0, 6-0) win against Montenegro. Tyler Van Heest also won 12 straight games, notching a (6-0, 6-0) win at No. 6 over Slaughter. Nick Mozena finished out a tight first set and won the final eight games of the match on his way to a (6-3, 6-0) win at No. 2 against Klamrowski. Torstein Jystad made his Norse debut in dual competition and was impressive with a (6-1, 6-2) victory over Scarpelli at No. 3 singles. LaFountaine won his second match of the day with a (6-0, 6-1) decision against Matsura. Bellio completed the sweep by defeating Dam (6-1, 6-3) at No. 5 singles.
