Art and Economics

Josi Severson always had an eye for designing and pattern making. Since high school, Josi knew she wanted to pursue the design business but felt the wide variety of opportunities and classes Luther provided would better her knowledge in the design as well as the business aspect of her interests. After graduating Luther in 2002, she went on to the Academy of Art in San Francisco, then started her career as a freelance textile designer in Minnesota and Montana.

Businesses such as Crate & Barrel, Richloom Fabrics, and D.L. Rhein have recognized and used her personal designs; all of which are hand crafted and printed with water-based ink. She currently has a retail showroom in downtown Minneapolis and has an online shopping site that shows her best and most recent patterns.

She most enjoyed the personable atmosphere of Luther’s tight knit community, and found having a diverse set of friends helped her value her own passions and make connections with people with which she may never have crossed paths. “It was a very personal program," she says. "My teachers knew me well and still keep in touch to some degree. Being able to get to know other people in the same major was also valuable; it was another form of encouragement to be with others that may be struggling to understand the same ideas as I was trying to develop.” She felt her double major gave her the skills she desired in order to open her own business, and she hopes the current Luther students get as much of a fulfilling experience as she did.
