Decorah native Luke Severson received his bachelor's degree from the University of Northern Iowa and his master's degree from Kansas State University. He is currently working as an Instructor of Ceramics at the University of Nebraska-Omaha and is the owner/operator of Morelic, a small art-focused contracting and consulting company specializing in object design and production.
I am primarily an object maker. The driving interest within this pursuit is an attempt to manipulate the communicative strength of recognizable objects and forms, creating sculptures in a confluence of material, thought and experience. In my work, content is dictated by whim. Creating and approaching objects as disparate components, I keep my studio practice open to chance, the influence of space, and material.Subsequently, content comes into focus as the pieces are combined and arranged. My current work speaks to themes of opposition and resolution, craft and production, hero and villain, natural and produced, fair and foul.
The work in this exhibition was conceived and executed in 2016 and early 2017. The work references issues of containment and collection, labor and play, sustenance and indulgence. These sculptures explore the overlapping areas of these themes.
