The Art Form of Cabaret

People sometimes think the term cabaret is associated with the Kander and Ebb musical called "Cabaret", or that it is a musical revue or collection of show tunes. The actual experience of "cabaret" as a genre is much simpler and also much broader than these definitions. What we really mean when we talk about cabaret is this: using music as a medium of storytelling, with the primary goal of emotional connection with the audience. Within the simplicity of that - the possibilities are endless. We can use any genre of music, we can inhabit any number of "characters" within a short amount of time. We can amuse, entertain, inform, take you by surprise, make you weep, make you laugh - all while singing a variety of styles of music. Cabaret is an intimate art form, typically experienced up close and personal - and works best with an audience willing to participate in a direct, emotional conversation with the singer.

I tasked each singer with bringing song ideas to the table for this show, asking them "What are you burning to sing? What songs are you passionate about?". Together we considered the show from the audience perspective and discovered the importance of comedy and lightness to balance the drama and darkness of emotional ballads. Throughout this process we have laughed (a lot), cried, cheered each other on and shared in huge progress and deep engagement as we watched these stories unfold. Thank you for being here to experience the way these lovely singers open their hearts to you.
