Jessica Paul granted faculty emerita status
At their May 13-14 meeting, the Board of Regents granted faculty emerita status to Jessica Paul, professor of music, who retires this spring after 30 years at Luther. Congratulations, Jessica!
College Resource Council: Call for nominations
The College Resource Council seeks a staff member with budget center responsibility to serve as one of two staff representatives to CRC. Appointed by the President, the staff representative will serve a three-year term. Jon Lund and Ann Sponberg Peterson currently hold these positions; Ann's term expires at the end of the semester.
All staff are invited to nominate an individual to fill this vacancy. Self-nominations are welcome as well. Send nominations to Suzanne Lyndon, <suzanne.lyndon>, by Tuesday, May 24.
The College Resource Council serves as a forum for the discussion and study of major college-wide issues. It provides an opportunity for representative members of the faculty and staff to serve in an advisory role to the administration and Regents of the College, especially in matters of long-range planning, resource allocation, and in the planning of the budget.
Fiscal year end approaching
Outstanding travel expense reports, original invoices, supporting purchase orders and purchase permits or account adjustments should be sent to the Office for Financial Services by Friday, June 10, to be included in the fiscal year 2015-16 budget. No faxed copies. Items for deposit must be sent to OFS by Friday, June 3. Thanks for helping OFS close out the year in a timely manner.
KATIE unavailable starting at 5 p.m. May 26
KATIE will transition to a new server platform, hosted by leading Moodle service provider eThinkEducation, on Friday, May 27. Grades are due at noon Thursday, May 26. KATIE will be unavailable beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 26, to start the backup and transition work. The KATIE support team will be testing and verifying that the system is working as expected and plans to have KATIE out of maintenance mode by the end of day on Friday. Users will access KATIE at the same location, katie.luther.edu, after the transition. ITS and the Library appreciate your patience during this transition.
Network maintenance May 30
The server room network will undergo maintenance between 6-10 a.m. Monday, May 30. During this time access to all Luther servers as well as access to the campus wired and wireless network will be interrupted. The LCGuest network, however, will not be affected and will remain up the entire time. The Luther website will remain accessible but will be read-only during the maintenance, so it will not be possible to make changes to pages or submit web forms.

Revised summer hours and 2016-17 holiday schedule
The summer work schedule has been revised with the following changes:

Please note that holiday pay will not exceed eight hours (see page 11 of the Staff Handbook). Employees will be paid for no more than eight hours on Monday, May 30, and Monday, July 4. Full-time staff should work with their supervisor to adjust their schedule during those weeks to assure that they reach 40 hours.
Monday-Friday: 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
Monday-Friday: 6 a.m.-8 a.m., 11 a.m.-7 p.m.
Saturday: 9 a.m.-noon
The Legends Center will be closed May 28-30 for Memorial Day weekend and June 29-July 8 for cleaning.

Renee Splichal Larson's new book, "A Witness: The Haiti Earthquake, a Song, Death, and Resurrection," is available for purchase in the Book Shop. Renee's first husband, Ben Larson '06, died in the catastrophic earthquake that struck Haiti in January 2010.

Seeking summer walking group leaders
Wellness is planning summer walking groups to promote physical activity, cross-campus conversation and getting away from our regular work area. Walk at a certain time during the workday? Willing to let others join you? Please email <wellness>. Wellness staff will compile a list of leaders, days, times and meeting places and share it with the campus. Walking will start June 1 and there will be participation incentives.
Luther lawns to be sprayed May 27
Luther College will spray the lawns with herbicides to provide well-maintained, visually attractive grounds for Luther students, employees and visitors, and to control undesirable weeds on athletic fields. Weather permitting, the date for spraying is the evening of Friday, May 27, with Saturday, May 28, and Sunday, May 29, set as back up days as needed.
2016-17 shuttle service
The Luther College shuttle service is designed to provide efficient, low-cost transportation for students as they travel to and from the Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin areas for breaks. All tickets must be purchased 24 hours in advance of the initial departure time. For the 2016-17 academic year, an additional $30 fee will be charged for those individuals added after the 24-hour deadline (no exceptions). For more information visit luther.edu/shuttle.

To the family of Marjorie (Hove) Barth '42, who passed away peacefully on March 3, at the age of 94, in Dubuque. Marge was married for 73 years to Frank Barth '40, Luther professor emeritus of accounting and management and former vice president for finance and treasurer of the college. A memorial service for family and friends will be held for Marge at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 11, at Peace Lutheran Church in Ridgeway, Iowa. The service will be followed by inurnment, for both Marge and Frank, who passed away in 2013, at the Lincoln Cemetery just outside of Ridgeway. A reception will be held at the Ridgeway Community Center in following the inurnment.
Custodial staff: Full-time, 12-month position. General custodial responsibilities include overall appearance of assigned academic and residence hall building(s) and public areas. Hours will generally be Monday through Friday. Must be able to work with little supervision, complete work thoroughly and promptly, and be self-motivated. High school diploma or equivalent required.
Assistant director of annual giving: The assistant director plans, directs and coordinates components of the annual giving program, in concert with the director of annual giving and the vice president for development. This is a full-time position. A bachelor's degree and excellent oral and written communication skills are required. At least two years of experience in higher education development is preferred.

Craig Mosher led a panel on the "Flint Water Crisis," was a participant on a panel on "Teaching Environmental Justice in Social Work," and chaired his last meeting of the Sustainability Committee at the Association of Baccalaureate Social Work Program Directors annual conference March 31-April 3 in Dallas. He also presented on "Doing Death Differently" at the annual conference of the Iowa Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers held April 14 in Des Moines.
Twenty-six Luther students were recognized at the Department of Economics and Business Senior Achievement Recognition ceremony that took place May 10 in Hammarskjold Lounge. The department recognized students graduating with accounting, economics and management majors.

"To be an 'explorer' used to mean a conqueror, the claimer of land and resources in the name of an empire. It was often, history tells us, accompanied by a great violence done to indigenous peoples and the theft of their land and treasures.
Once the land had been claimed, disputed, and the dust of wars had settled, the term 'explorer' evolved to connote a voyager and discoverer, one who accomplished a feat for the ﬁrst time, diving deep sea trenches or climbing the highest peaks. What it will mean tomorrow is entirely up to us.
Perhaps the new generation of explorers will be protectors of our vanishing gardens and eroding coastlines, bastions against our cultural excesses. I hope it will come to signify those who venture out into the world not to take from it, but to know it better, love it better, protect it. I hope it will mean those who rather than conquering a peak to plant a ﬂag, return with an appreciation for the great variety of life in all forms, and with solutions for protecting it."
