Laboratory for the Investigation of Mind, Body, and Spirit

"Research is to teaching as sin is to confession. If you don’t participate in the former, you have very little to say in the latter" — John Slaughter

The Laboratory for the Investigation of Mind, Body, and Spirit consists of a network of students, alumni, colleagues, and friends of the laboratory that investigate the psycho-spiritual antecedents, correlates, and outcomes of health. A brief summary of what our lab is all about can be found here.  Our primary topic of interest is in forgiveness and health. We conduct research using three different paradigms:

  • The first is epidemiological, utilizing data from large, population-based surveys collected and archived by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) or the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS).
  • The second paradigm involves the use of psychophysiological and neuro-endocrine measures to assess the effects of forgiveness in a state-of-the-art laboratory recently built in 2009.
  • The third approach we take is to conduct studies of the effectiveness of forgiveness training and education in bringing about improved health and well-being. We are conducting these studies in Africa, at the Mayo Clinic, and with Luther College students.
