Shakespeare Society

Members of the Shakespeare Society participate in a Stage Combat Workshop.

Luther College Shakespeare Society is a student-led organization advised by faculty member Lindsey Row-Heyveld. Luther College Shakespeare Society connects the disciplines of Theatre, English, and History. We resolve to engage with Shakespeare’s texts using critical analysis, historical context, modern relevance, and performance practices. The goal of this organization is to foster an inclusive environment where any and all students can meet, read, discuss, and perform the works of William Shakespeare. Through this goal, we emphasize the values of critical thinking, creativity, and inclusivity of identities and ideas.

2020-2021 Season

The Shakespeare Society is a relatively new organization, formed November 2019. We are working to define our events and our goals for the year, but here is a sneak peak of what is to come:

  • American Moor discussion and interview with playwright Keith Hamilton Cobb
    • American Moor is a play examining the experience of a Black man in America through the story of Othello. The date and specifics of this event are TBD.
  • The Winter's Tale Behind the Scenes Event
    •   A behind the scenes look at Luther's Mainstage production of The Winter's Tale by William Shakespeare. A tour of the space and an interview of the actors. January date TBD.
  • Spring Shakespeare Education Workshop
    • A workshop about the ways to teach complicated material like Shakespeare to children and young adults. Dates TBD.
  • Much Ado About Nothing Events
    • An event focused around the Paideia program and their study of Much Ado about Nothing. We will host events for first years to learn about the play, like watching the movie or hosting a study night. Dates TBD.
  • Monologue Performance and Play Discussion Nights
    • We will host multiple events focusing around reading lesser-known Shakespeare works and discussing them, as well as monologue performance nights in which actors read material of their choice. Dates TBD.
