In the summer of 2012, Luther installed 11 water bottle fillers around campus. The purpose was to reduce the usage of single-use plastic water bottles and keep them out of the waste stream. Money for the purchase of the fillers came primarily from the deferred maintenance budget and the Towers remodel budget.
The fillers make it easy and encourage students, faculty, and staff to drink filtered water from a reusable bottle instead of purchasing and discarding plastic water bottles every day. The locations of the fillers was determined by traffic in the area as well as visibility.

Data is collected weekly based on the number of fills recorded by the counter attached to each filler.
