The Center for Sustainable Communities is partnering with the Winneshiek Energy District, local businesses, and Decorah citizens to explore the possibility of a municipal electric utility. This work is being carried out via a non-profit organization, Decorah Power.
A feasibility study will determine if a municipal electric utility is in the best interest of the City of Decorah and its citizens. Upon completion and review of the study, Decorah Power and/or the City Council will decide whether or not to bring the idea of forming a municipal electric utility to a city-wide vote. If the public votes affirmative, the City files a municipal electric utility application with the Iowa Utilities Board. If approved, the city would buy out the electrical infrastructure and service the customer base.
