Spend the summer immersed in food and farming! The Luther Gardens provide a unique way for you to learn about food production, food safety standards and creative growing techniques, all the while producing healthy, fresh local food for the college cafeteria. Food and Farm Crew members also assist with packing and delivery food for the Cafeteria to Community Program and have the opportunity to help with food education classes throughout the summer.

Preference given to students who will be on campus or in Decorah the entire summer.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Tending to plants in the greenhouse and high tunnel
  • Preparing beds
  • Planting, weeding, harvesting and processing produce
  • Adhering to strict food safety protocol when working in the gardens
  • Coordinating with dining services on invoicing and delivering
  • Maintaining the community gardens (mowing pathways, string trimming the perimeter)
  • Taking care of equipment and tools
  • Maintaining accurate records of work (planting, weeding, harvest dates)
  • Coordinating with grounds and other facilities staff on projects as needed
  • Packing and delivery food for the Cafeteria to Community Program
  • Assisting with food education classes
  • Other projects as assigned

Qualifications

  • Enrollment at Luther College
  • Valid driver’s license preferred
  • Physically able to perform duties required
  • Interest in food production
  • Ability to carry up to 40 pounds
  • Team-minded orientation
  • Positive attitude
  • Ability to work in extreme heat and perform physical labor
