Youth Opportunity Center Meal Program Lead

The Youth Opportunity Center (YOC) Meal Program Lead will assist in all aspects of food preparation as directed by the YOC Meal Program Manager. The YOC Meal Program Lead is responsible for duties in relation to direct food preparation including food preparation, food storage, sanitation and safety of the work environment and any other duties that arise.

  1. Prepare and assist in serving breakfast, lunch and dinner at the Youth Opportunity Center
  2. Inspect supplies, equipment, and work areas to ensure conformance to sanitation and food safety standards.
  3. Maintain a clean work space
  4. Help volunteers in the preparation, cooking, garnishing, and serving of food.
  5. Assist in any clean up duties including in the kitchen, dining room, or pantry.
  6. Check the quality of raw and cooked food products to ensure that safety standards are met.
  7. Check the quantity and quality of received products.
  8. Assist in maintaining proper record production and operational data on specified forms as required.
  9. Maintain a positive and professional approach with program participants and volunteers.
  10. Attend scheduled supervision and all staff meetings as appropriate.
  11. Communicate professionally with Youth Opportunity Center staff, other IHYC staff, and volunteers.
  12. Assist as needed in picking up/sorting out food donations from community partners.
  13. Willingness to learn new information as needed such as kitchen safety training, food safety training, or any other job enhancement training as it arises.
  14. Interact and train program youth on basic cooking skills and how to prepare simple meals.
  15. Attend appropriate training sessions, staff meetings, and supervisory meetings on request.

Understanding of how to manage a food inventory system and willingness to learn is essential.


Associates degree in Culinary Arts or related culinary certificate is preferred.
Two years of cooking experience is preferred. A background working with at-risk youth is a plus.




This is a full-time, non-exempt position.


No travel is expected for this position. A valid Iowa driver’s license is required.


The noise level is usually minimal to moderate. Works in well-lighted, climate-controlled environment.

While performing duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; may need to sit for extended periods of time; use stairs, as needed; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. Physically move to access all YSS locations. Employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, repeatedly. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time.


This position will engage and assist all YSS volunteers (individuals and groups) adhering to volunteer management best practices to ensure meaningful volunteer experiences. This position will maximize the skills and interests of all YSS volunteers to better impact our organization and the youth and families we serve.
