Two teams needing a win to stay in the hunt to make the American Rivers Conference six-team tournament went the distance tonight in Pella, Iowa. Unfortunately for the Norse, they were defeated by the Dutch 3-2.
Luther jumped out to a 2-0 lead, winning set one 25-22 and followed with a 32-30 victory in set two. The Norse put together a 7-4 run to secure the victory in set one. Set two was a back-and-forth battle that resulted in 13 ties, with Luther scoring the final two points of the set.
Central came back and won sets three and four with scores of 25-22 and 25-20. The Norse trailed by as many as six points (15-9) in set three and were never able to battle back completely. They pulled to within one (22-23), but Central tallied the final two points to secure the victory.
In set four, Luther held a 17-13 advantage, but was outscored 12-3 down the stretch, that sent the match into the fifth and deciding set.
Central never trailed in set five and won 15-11 to secure the 3-2 come-from-behind victory.
Central was led by the trio of Ruth Hruska-Kelly, Erin Dilger and Krissa Larson. Hruska-Kelly recorded a match high 21 kills, while Larson had 16 and Dilger 12. Amanda Smith was credited with 55 assists.
The loss drops Luther to 1-4 in the A-R-C and in eighth place. Central improved to 2-4 and is in seventh place.
This Saturday, Oct. 19, Luther travels to Augustana-Rock Island and will face UW-Platteville at 1:30 p.m. and Augustana at 3:30 p.m.
