Luther claimed at least a share of the American Rivers Conference championship this afternoon, after defeating Central College 8-1 in Pella. The win gives Luther an A-R-C mark of 7-0 with one match remaining. That match will take place tomorrow morning at Simpson College. If the Norse win that match they will be the outright champions.
Luther has now won three of the last four conference titles and since 1982 has won 28 league titles overall. The women's tennis team is also the first Luther team to capture an A-R-C championship.
This afternoon the Norse led 2-1 after doubles and went on to sweep singles play with four of the six matches decided in straight sets.
The doubles teams of Devon Bourget and Shelby Cook at No. 1 and Kelsey Kruse and Lexi Hastings at No. 2, remained unbeaten in A-R-C play with a record of 6-0. Both teams posted (8-7) victories. Anna Spencer and Aurora Schossow were defeated at No. 3 (8-3).
In singles, Bourget at No. 1, Cook at No. 2, Kruse at No. 3 and Spencer at No. 5 all won in straight sets. Hastings defeated Katie Larson in three sets (4-6, 6-2, 10-5). Kylie Dunning also won in three sets over Sarah Schirm (5-7, 6-2, 10-7).
