Annual Spring Trip - Orlando, Florida

The Luther women's tennis team is scheduled to play five matches during its annual spring trip to Orlando, Florida. All five matches will be played at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Campus.

Recaps and match statistics will be published when available throughout the week. All times are eastern standard time.

Thursday, March 21 - Luther 8, Stevens Institute of Technology (NJ) 1

Luther improved to 9-5 thanks to an 8-1 victory over Stevens Institute of Technology. This was the first of five matches that will be played during the Norse spring break trip to Orlando, Florida.

Luther jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles and won five of six matches in singles en route to the victory. All three doubles matches ended with finals of 8-3.

Devon Bourget at No. 1, Britta Pressler at No. 2, Shelby Cook at No. 3 and Ellie Hemker at No. 5 all won in straight sets in singles. Kelsey Kruse at No. 6 won a three-set match over Gabriella Tantillo (6-7 (7-9), 6-3, 10-5).

Friday, March 22 -  Calvin College (MI) 6, Luther 3

Luther was defeated by Calvin this evening by a final of 6-3. The Norse jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles, but were able to win just one match in singles play. 

In doubles, Kelsey Kruse and Devon Bourget posted an (8-3) win at No. 2, and Stephanie Almquist and Anna Spencer won at No. 3 (8-6).

Four of the six singles matches were decided in three sets. Shelby Cook secured the lone single victory defeating Maria Poortenga (4-6, 6-2, 11-9) at No. 3. Almquist at No. 4, Ellie Hemker at No. 5 and Kruse at No. 6 all lost in three sets.

Monday March 25 - Luther 5, Pacific University (WA) 4

The Norse were down 2-1 at the conclusion of doubles and battled back to secure a 5-4 victory. Shelby Cook and Britta Pressler posted the lone victory in doubles by defeating Chantelle Baclay and Marissa Hayashi (8-2).

In singles with the Norse leading 4-3, Cook secured the match victory in three sets, defeating Adrienne Powell (1-6, 6-2, 10-8) at No. 3.

Stephanie Almquist at No. 4, Ellie Hemker and No. 5 and Anna Spencer at No. 6 all won in straight sets.

Box Score

The victory gives Luther an overall record of 10-6. 

Monday, March 25 - Luther 7, George Fox University (OR) 2

Luther wrapped up a successful afternoon by defeating George Fox University (OR) 7-2 at the USTA National Campus.

The Norse jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after doubles and won four of six singles matches en route to their 11th win of the season against six losses.

In doubles, Shelby Cook and Britta Pressler won at No. 1 (8-2). Devon Bourget and Kelsey Kruse posted a tie-breaker victory at No. 2 (8-7 (7-3)). Stephanie Almquist and Anna Spencer won (8-4) at No. 3.

All four singles wins were in straight sets. These victories were produced by Borget at No. 1, Cook at No. 3, Almquist aat No. 4 and Kruse at No. 6.

Tuesday, March 26 - Whitworth University (WA) 8, Luther 1

Luther was defeated by Whitworth University 8-1 this morning in Orlando, Florida. The doubles team of Kelsey Kruse and Devon Bourget defeated Emma Jo Wiley and Grace Bethards (8-7 (7-1)) at No. 2 for Luther's lone point. The victory gives the duo a season record of 13-5.

Four of the six singles matches were decided in straight sets. Stephanie Almquists at No. 4 and Ellie Hemker at No. 5, both lost three-set tie breakers.

This was the final match of the spring trip. Luther finished the trip with a mark of 3-2 and it is now 11-6 overall.
